He claimed to have felt great remorse for his crimes as a Death Eater, however Moody was sceptical. However, Karkaroff was able to satisfy the Council when he submitted the name Augustus Rookwood , an Unspeakable who was spying on the Ministry of Magic for Voldemort.
This information was new to the Ministry, and he was sent back to Azkaban for a review of his case. From Sirius Black 's comment that Karkaroff "put a load of other people into Azkaban in his place", it can be assumed that he named other Death Eaters in addition to Rookwood after his initial hearing or that the discovery of Rookwood helped the Ministry weed out other Death Eaters and other Voldemort supporters.
In the — school year , the Triwizard Tournament was held for the first time in many years at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.
From the moment of his arrival at Hogwarts, it was obvious that Karkaroff was heavily biassed towards the champion from his own school, Viktor Krum.
It was apparent that Karkaroff and "Moody" not only knew each other, but had an unpleasant history.
Karkaroff unsuccessfully tried to avoid "Moody" after that first evening. He also sneaked around to gather information on the tasks in hopes of giving Krum an advantage.
He also ruthlessly insulted Dumbledore when Crouch attacked Krum in the shadows and accused him of foul-play, going as far as spitting on the ground at Dumbledore's feet.
However, this nearly earned him significant physical injury at the hands of Rubeus Hagrid ; Hagrid, fervently loyal to Dumbledore, lifted Karkaroff by the throat, smashed him against a tree and yelled at him to apologise for this disgusting display.
Dumbledore, however, ordered Hagrid to let him go, to which he complied reluctantly. Karkaroff present at the Yule Ball.
About halfway through the school year, Karkaroff's actions became increasingly suspicious. At the Yule Ball , which he attended with Professor Aurora Sinistra , and again after a Potions lesson, he confronted Professor Snape about a secret matter.
His agitated and increasingly apprehensive state aroused the suspicions of Harry Potter, Ron Weasley , and Hermione Granger.
Snape admitted that Karkaroff had come to him, concerned about the Dark Mark on his left forearm, a mark Snape also bore as a former Death Eater.
Barty Crouch Jr doubted he would get far, as the Dark Lord had "ways of tracking his enemies" and no one who had ever betrayed the Dark Lord ever got far.
Contrary to Crouch's belief, Karkaroff was able to stay alive for a whole year, fleeing to parts unknown, though a possible contribution is that Voldemort was trying to keep a low profile due to the Ministry's denial at the time.
Inevitably, however, Karkaroff was finally tracked down to a shack in the north and killed by Death Eaters, the Dark Mark cast into the sky, shortly after Voldemort's revival was finally accepted by the Ministry, which further enforced that his year-long survival was due to the Death Eaters keeping under the radar at the time.
This was revealed to the assembled guests of Harry Potter 's sixteenth birthday party by Remus Lupin , who, among others, were surprised Karkaroff had survived for so long.
Karkaroff was described to be tall and thin like Albus Dumbledore , but with an unctuously cheerful demeanour, while his smile "didn't reach his eyes", which were blue and remained cold and unmoving.
His weak chin was not completely covered by his goatee, which ended with a small curl. His teeth were yellow and he liked to dress in sleek, silver furs.
As a former Death Eater , he bore the Dark Mark on his left inner forearm. Karkaroff was a ruthless and immoral man, having been a Death Eater in his youth and a turncoat when it suited him, as well as showing blatant favouritism as a judge of the Triwizard Tournament to increase the chances that his school 's champion, Viktor Krum , would win.
During his trial, Igor feigned regret and flattery to the judges, showing him to be a talented actor and liar, a skill Sirius Black informed Harry Potter of.
Despite his position as headmaster of Durmstrang, he showed neither responsibility nor care for his students, as he encouraged an atmosphere of fear and intimidation at Durmstrang while it was under his stewardship, forcing his students to steer the ship while he stayed in the cabin, harshly scolding Poliakoff in contrast to doting on the famous Krum, and then ultimately abandoned all of them to protect his own life, showing his immense selfishness, egotism and cowardice.
His membership in the Death Eater organisation and implementation — or, at least, continuation — of a policy of refusing to admit Muggle-borns to Durmstrang , indicated that Karkaroff was prejudiced against those of different blood status though if so he had did not seem to have the level of sadistic, genocidal hatred possessed by other Death Eaters such as Bellatrix Lestrange and Yaxley.
Nevertheless, Karkaroff was at least during his time with the Death Eaters , something of a sadist, as he was noted to have assisted Dolohov in torturing Muggles, and even after he "reformed" during his headship of Durmstrang, he encouraged an environment where intimidation and fear rule over the school, leading parents to see him as unprincipled and egotistical.
Even his warm greeting to Albus Dumbledore when he came to Hogwarts was less proof of a civil nature, and more proof of his ability to play at civility when it suited him.
This is supported by his later yelling at Dumbledore after Harry Potter's name came out of the Goblet of Fire, and even spitting at his feet.
Although Karkaroff proved himself to be a skilled actor and liar, he was also poor with controlling his emotions, as his short-temper led him to become increasingly angry and rude at Dumbledore and the British Ministry of Magic for allowing Harry to participate in the Triwizard Tournament that culminated to him spitting in front of Dumbledore's feet.
His lack of bravery led him to continuously bombard Snape about the Dark Mark's increasing colour, constantly expressing a worried tone and expression.
Karkaroff seemed to have been a reasonably skilled wizard , as it is mentioned that it was impressive how he remained hidden from Voldemort for so long after the latter's rebirth, although Voldemort was keeping a low profile during the Ministry's denial, and that Karkaroff's death occurred shortly after the Ministry finally saw and accepted Voldemort's return further enforces this as a reason for his year-long survival.
He was able to gain knowledge of a good number of Death Eaters' identities, despite Voldemort's tight secretive operations, including the otherwise undiscovered spy Augustus Rookwood , showing that he is at least skilled in intelligence gathering.
While few of his skills were seen, Karkaroff must have been a skilled wizard, given that he was the Headmaster of Durmstrang as well as a former Death Eater.
His skills were such that he was able to evade the likes of Alastor Moody and even Lord Voldemort himself for extended periods of time.
In his younger days, Karkaroff was a friend and comrade of Severus Snape. After Voldemort's first downfall, Karkaroff was caught by Aurors and briefly imprisoned in Azkaban.
He betrayed many Death Eaters in order to avoid remaining in Azkaban. One of them was Snape, which might have indicated a strained relationship after Snape's betrayal.
Karkaroff learned that Snape had abandoned the Death Eaters and become a member of the Order of the Phoenix, and therefore Karkaroff was dismayed to hear yet another one of his names was useless.
Karkaroff met Snape again in , during the Triwizard Tournament. When his Dark Mark began to burn, Karkaroff told Snape about it, because he knew that Snape had felt it too.
Snape told him that he himself had nothing to be afraid of, and asked him if he Karkaroff could say the same. Snape certainly seemed more and more irritated by Karkaroff's constant bombardment on the issue, and continued to evade him more and more.
Snape added that he wasn't "such a coward", and Dumbledore replied that Snape was "a braver man by far than Igor Karkaroff".
After Voldemort's return, Karkaroff, unlike Snape, escaped Hogwarts and went into hiding. He was killed by Death Eaters some time in the next year.
It is unknown how Severus Snape reacted when he learned of this. Albus Dumbledore was a participant of Karkaroff's trial. However, when Alastor Moody told Dumbledore that it was a good idea to take information off Karkaroff and send him to the Dementors , Dumbledore disagreed.
Karkaroff and Dumbledore met again during the Triwizard Tournament , as they both were headmasters of their respective schools.
It is possible that Karkaroff and Dumbledore knew each other better than they appeared to, as Karkaroff said "the good old Hogwarts" when he visited the school, and this may imply that Karkaroff had his education at Hogwarts.
He and Dumbledore seemed happy to see each other as they laughed and hugged in greeting. However, beneath this civil greeting was Dumbledore's belief that Karkaroff was a coward, or at least weak.
And despite their initial greetings, when Harry was selected to be the second champion of the Triwizard Tournament, Karkaroff's interactions towards Dumbledore became more hostile; when Krum was attacked by who they thought was Barty Crouch Snr , Karkaroff flew into a rage and spat at Dumbledore's feet.
This resulted in Rubeus Hagrid , who was loyal to Dumbledore, brutally pinning Karkaroff against a tree and demanding an apology.
Lord Voldemort , his former master. He was also one of the Death Eaters who didn't try to find Voldemort after his downfall.
This made him fear the return of Voldemort and his loyal Death Eaters. After Lord Voldemort's rebirth , Karkaroff left Hogwarts and hid in a shack.
However, Voldemort and the Death Eaters found him and killed him. Voldemort condemned Karkaroff as a coward who needed to pay for his refusal to return.
Karkaroff betrayed many Death Eaters during his attempt to avoid imprisonment in Azkaban. These Death Eaters included Antonin Dolohov , Evan Rosier , Travers , Mulciber and Augustus Rookwood ; he became desperate when he heard some of these Death Eaters were already caught or killed, worried they did not contribute to his own pardon as opposed to actually mourning for his comrades, as he feigned congratulations for the judges for these arrests.
It is most likely that he had betrayed many other Death Eaters, as Sirius Black stated that Karkaroff had "put a load of other people into Azkaban in his place".
Bartemius Crouch Junior came to hate Igor for his disloyalty to Voldemort, and repeatedly intimidated him while disguised as Alastor Moody , even musing on how Voldemort would easily track down a fleeing Karkaroff.
On the other hand, fellow rogue Death Eater Lucius Malfoy apparently retained a positive relationship with Karkaroff, as he intended to send his son Draco to Durmstrang, partially due to knowing the headmaster personally.
After Voldemort's rebirth , Karkaroff didn't return to Voldemort. He was eventually caught and killed by Death Eaters in Alastor Moody was the Auror who captured Karkaroff after Voldemort's downfall, so naturally hated Karkaroff for being a Death Eater and a coward.
He also apparently has an unpleasant history with Alastor Moody, and tries to avoid him unsuccessfully for the entirety of the tournament, not knowing that it is Barty Crouch Jr.
Lupin also expresses surprise that Karkaroff managed to live even a year after deserting Voldemort and that no one else has been known to avoid capture quite as long.
Predrag Bjelac appeared as Karkaroff in the film adaptation of Goblet of Fire. She is the most faithful member of Voldemort's inner circle.
Bellatrix is portrayed as paranoid, insane, and fanatically devoted to Voldemort, seeing service to him as the noblest duty for any true wizard or witch.
Bellatrix takes an obvious pleasure in acts of torture and cruelty, as demonstrated when she kills her cousin, Sirius Black. She is a witch of prodigious ability, as demonstrated by her many victories in duels against other characters, and as noted by Harry in the final book.
Bellatrix was born Bellatrix Black to Cygnus Black and Druella Rosier in the year and has two sisters, Andromeda who was disowned by the family for marrying Muggle-born Ted Tonks, which her pure-blood family saw as betrayal; therefore, she was consequently blasted off the family tree and Narcissa wife of Lucius and mother to Draco.
Bellatrix married Rodolphus Lestrange after leaving Hogwarts because it was "expected of her to marry a pure-blood".
However, the marriage was loveless, and Rowling stated in an interview that Bellatrix's true love was Voldemort.
During the trial, she said Voldemort would rise again and reward them. When Voldemort has his body renewed, he reflects that the Lestranges went to Azkaban rather than renounce him and that they will be deeply rewarded when Azkaban is broken open.
Several months after her master's resurrection, Bellatrix is one of the many Death Eaters who escape Azkaban and rejoin him.
She is present at the battle of the Department of Mysteries in the climax of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix , in which a group of Death Eaters attempt to steal Sybill Trelawney 's prophecy pertaining to Voldemort's downfall.
Rowling demonstrates Bellatrix's ability during the mission when she overpowers her niece Tonks and Kingsley Shacklebolt in one-on-one duels, kills her cousin Sirius by blasting him through the veil in the Death Chamber, and deflects one of Dumbledore's spells as she makes her escape.
Harry attempts to use the Cruciatus Curse on her in revenge for killing Sirius, but the curse is ineffective due to the lack of real cruelty behind it.
Voldemort suddenly appears but moments later, Bellatrix is subdued by Dumbledore in the Ministry of Magic 's atrium as he prepares to duel Voldemort.
Unable to overcome Dumbledore, Voldemort rescues Bellatrix by disapparating with her. At the beginning of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince , Bellatrix attempts to keep Narcissa from confiding Draco's secret mission to Snape at Spinner's End , and she is furious to learn that Snape already knows about the plan.
Rowling used the conversation between Snape and Bellatrix to imply that Voldemort is still furious at Bellatrix's failure in the previous book.
Snape surprises Bellatrix by replying to each of her arguments and by agreeing to create an Unbreakable Vow with Narcissa to assist Draco in his mission to assassinate Dumbledore.
Later in the book, it is mentioned by Snape that Bellatrix had been teaching occlumency to Draco, in an effort to aid him with his mission.
In the film, she and Fenrir Greyback arrive at the Burrow the Weasley house and burn it down.
In the film, she is one of several Death Eaters smuggled into Hogwarts using a pair of Vanishing Cabinets to assassinate Dumbledore, though she does not take part in this mission in the book.
Bellatrix later becomes the main antagonist in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. The first chapter of the book implies that Voldemort has yet to forgive Bellatrix for her failure, as he mocks her with the fact that her niece Tonks married werewolf Remus Lupin.
Bellatrix then tortures Hermione with the Cruciatus Curse, believing them to have sneaked into her vault at Gringotts due to their possession of Godric Gryffindor's sword , but Dobby appears and saves the prisoners, though not before being hit by a knife thrown by Bellatrix as they disapparate to safety.
Later in the book, Harry, Ron, and Hermione use a stray hair of Bellatrix's to disguise Hermione as Bellatrix using polyjuice potion, to gain access to the Lestranges' Gringotts vault.
Though Voldemort apparently punishes Bellatrix and the Malfoys severely for interrupting his hunt for the Elder Wand only to have Potter escape and steal the cup, she nevertheless fights for her master in the Battle of Hogwarts towards the end of the novel.
Rowling stated in an interview that, during the battle, it was Bellatrix who killed Tonks. An enraged Molly Weasley engages Bellatrix and fires a curse that hits Bellatrix right over the heart, killing her.
In the film series, Bellatrix is played by Helena Bonham Carter. Helen McCrory auditioned for the role in the fifth film but dropped out due to pregnancy, making Bonham Carter win the role.
McCrory was cast as her sister Narcissa Malfoy in the final three films instead. Draco Malfoy is the pure blooded son of Lucius and Narcissa Malfoy.
He was a notorious bully to Harry Potter and his friends because Hermione has Muggle parents, Draco was also assigned to kill Dumbledore, but his heart told him otherwise and Snape had to do it for him.
Draco, like his family, is part of Slytherin house. Lucius was a school governor of Hogwarts before being sacked, and has very close connections at the Ministry of Magic.
To maintain his reputation and influence, he makes donations to the Ministry, to charity, and to St Mungo's Hospital. He was educated at Hogwarts, where he was a prefect in Slytherin House.
Lucius knows the diary is cleverly enchanted, but is not aware that it is a horcrux containing a part of Voldemort's soul. He is careless with it and punished by Voldemort himself.
Lucius intends to use the opening of the Chamber of Secrets by Ginny to discredit her father, Arthur Weasley , and Dumbledore.
Lucius' plans are ultimately thwarted with the help of the Malfoys' house-elf Dobby, and Harry, but not before the Chamber is opened and Lucius uses the ensuing terror and threats to attack their families to influence the school's Board of Governors to discredit and dismiss Dumbledore as Headmaster.
Subsequently, Harry tricks Lucius into setting Dobby free. Upon this, Lucius attempts to attack Harry with his wand but Dobby disarms him before he can do any harm.
Lucius is ultimately stripped of his title as a Hogwarts school governor. Despite his sacking, he still maintains strong ties with the Ministry of Magic.
Later in that book, when Voldemort rises again and summons his Death Eaters, Malfoy rejoins him and asserts that he had done everything he could to help his master, who however remains unimpressed.
Harry reports Malfoy's declarations to Minister Fudge, who refuses to believe him. Thus, the wealthy Malfoy continues to maintain strong ties with the Ministry.
Lucius tries several ways to get the prophecy from Harry without breaking it, but the boy and his friends manage to escape from the Hall.
Malfoy finally meets him in the Death Chamber, where Harry is about to give it to Malfoy when the Order of the Phoenix breaks into the Ministry and begins to duel with the Death Eaters.
Dumbledore himself arrives at the end of the battle and Malfoy is captured and sent to Azkaban. By the final book, Voldemort has given Malfoy his freedom, though he looks significantly the worse for wear, having lost Voldemort's favour.
Voldemort treats him with great contempt by hijacking his house for Headquarters, and is forcing his son to do dark deeds against his nature, sparking sympathy for the notorious family for the first time in the series.
Voldemort borrows Lucius' wand which is accidentally destroyed by Harry Potter. Later in the book, Lucius, along with his wife and sister-in-law, accidentally allow Harry and his friends to escape from Malfoy Manor.
Voldemort punishes them severely, eventually putting them under house arrest. Despite his long-standing position as a Death Eater and Voldemort's advocate of pure-blood supremacy, Lucius has decided his love for his family is more important than his involvement in the war.
During the Battle of Hogwarts, he pleads with Voldemort to let him onto the battlefield to locate his son. He and the rest of his family are reunited at the end of the book.
Following Voldemort's death, Lucius, Narcissa, and Draco all manage to " weasel their way out " of being sent to Azkaban due to Narcissa's aiding Harry in the Forbidden Forest.
According to Forbes magazine, in , Lucius Malfoy was number 12 on their Forbes Fictional 15 list.
In the film series, Lucius is portrayed by Jason Isaacs as an adult. Scenes with Tony Coburn as a teenage Lucius were cut from the final movie.
There, he was a close friend of Sirius Black , James Potter , and Remus Lupin , although he was the least intelligent and least talented of the group.
With Sirius and James' help, Pettigrew becomes an Animagus , with the ability to transform at will into a rat. After leaving Hogwarts, Pettigrew joins forces with Voldemort, and in exchange for his own life becomes Voldemort's spy within the Order of the Phoenix, of which Pettigrew is a member.
When the Potters know that their son, Harry, is Voldemort's target, Sirius suggests to them to use Pettigrew as Secret-Keeper because he does not believe Voldemort would ever suspect a "weak, talentless thing" like Pettigrew.
Pettigrew betrays the secret to Voldemort, an act that leads to James and Lily's death and ironically, Voldemort's near-destruction. Sirius seeks revenge on Pettigrew, but during the confrontation, Pettigrew publicly accuses Sirius of the Potters' deaths, murders twelve Muggles, and cuts off his own index finger before transforming into a rat, thereby framing Sirius for the betrayal of the Potters, as well as for his own murder and that of the bystanders.
Pettigrew is seemingly posthumously awarded the Order of Merlin, and hides during the next twelve years. Wanting to keep an eye on the wizarding world, he masquerades as a rat, first as Percy Weasley 's pet, and then as Ron Weasley 's.
In this form named "Scabbers" by the family , he is missing a toe from one paw due to the finger he cut off. Although Pettigrew appears in the first two books in the form of Scabbers, his identity is not revealed until Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , in which he is the main antagonist.
When a photograph of the Weasley family appears in the Daily Prophet newspaper, Sirius recognises Pettigrew's Animagus form and escapes from Azkaban to track him down.
The two confront each other in the Shrieking Shack , where Lupin and Black compel Scabbers to resume his human form. Pettigrew confesses his treachery, claiming to have committed it only to save his own life.
With Sirius and Lupin about to take their revenge, Harry begs Sirius to turn Pettigrew over to the Ministry of Magic instead, to prove Sirius' innocence.
Pettigrew escapes while being led out of the Shack when Lupin transforms into a werewolf. Harry's actions result in Pettigrew owing him a life debt.
Pettigrew returns to the service of Voldemort, seeking him out in the forests of Albania and helping him to return to a feeble baby's body.
He abducts a Ministry of Magic employee named Bertha Jorkins , who is able to provide Voldemort with valuable information.
Pettigrew almost always referred to as "Wormtail" hereafter assists Barty Crouch Jr. In the climactic confrontation in that book, Wormtail murders Cedric Diggory on Voldemort's orders, and brews the complex potion to regenerate Voldemort, severing his hand as one of the ingredients.
Upon his return to corporeal form, Voldemort replaces Wormtail's missing hand with a silver one that possesses five intact fingers and great strength.
Despite his actions, Wormtail's fortunes remain low; in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince Snape treats him as a servant, and in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows he is tasked with keeping watch over prisoners in the cellar of Malfoy Manor.
While Harry and Ron are being kept there, Wormtail checks on the prisoners and is attacked. Wormtail begins strangling Harry with the silver hand, but when reminded by Harry that he once saved his life, Wormtail hesitates for a moment.
The silver hand turns against him and strangles him to death as punishment for his moment of pity. Pettigrew is portrayed by Timothy Spall as an adult, and by Charles Hughes as a teenager in the films.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows — Part 1 , Pettigrew is not strangled to death by his own silver hand in Malfoy Manor as in the book; he is instead struck by Dobby and collapses.
It is unknown whether he was simply stunned or killed. Severus Snape is characterised as a person of considerable complexity, whose coldly sarcastic and controlled exterior conceals deep emotions and anguish.
In the first novel of the series, Snape is a teacher who is hostile from the start toward Harry and is built up to be the primary antagonist until the final chapters.
As the series progresses, Snape's portrayal evolves from that of a malicious and partisan teacher to that of a complex, pivotal character of moral ambiguity, whose true loyalties are not revealed until the end.
Corban Yaxley is the brutal-faced Death Eater who is present in the battle in which Snape killed Dumbledore.
In Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows , Yaxley is invited to Malfoy Manor to witness the murder of Charity Burbage , and argues with Snape about the correct date of Harry's departure from the Dursleys', but John Dawlish , an Auror who is tricked by an Order member, gives him incorrect information.
He uses Thicknesse to Imperius the other major department heads and they allow Voldemort to murder Rufus Scrimgeour ; thus Thicknesse becomes Minister for Magic.
He also assists Dolores Umbridge in leading the Muggle-Born Registration Commission, and the two seem to have a good relationship, together humiliating the Muggle-borns.
Both are immobilised by Harry, but Yaxley recovers and grabs Hermione while she is Apparating her friends to safety. Yaxley arrives with them at Grimmauld Place, allowing him to reveal their headquarters to the Death Eaters, but not to the location that the trio subsequently Apparate to.
He participates in the Battle of Hogwarts, where he duels with Professor Flitwick and is later seen among those who wait with Voldemort for Harry Potter to come to him, mistakenly believing that Harry would not come within the allotted time.
When the battle resumes, he is defeated by George Weasley and Lee Jordan. Peter Mullan plays Yaxley in the film adaptation of Deathly Hallows.

Alastor Moody eventually ended up apprehending Karkaroff to which he was later sent to Azkaban. Succeeding Voldemort's first fall from power, Karkaroff was called to appear before a trial in the Ministry of Magic.
He used his cunning to convince many he felt great remorse for his crimes as a Death Eater. He gave many names of Death Eaters who were either killed, incarcerated or defected.
This showed his desperation due to the uselessness of the revelation of these names. Despite his previous efforts proving to be useless, he ended up appeasing the court when he gave the name of Augustus Rockwood, a ministry spy who was working on the side of the Death Eaters.
After some time, he manages to become the headmaster of Durmstrang Institute. As headmaster, he instilled fear into his students by encouraging an enviroment of intimidation.
